Fencing for Kids
Whether you’re child is a sword nerd, an athlete looking to try something new, an absolute-non-athlete who’s hated every other sport they’ve tried, or a child who needs a hobby that doesn’t involve the couch
More than Just Fencing
At MoDuel, we teach our fencers a lot more than just fencing. We teach our fencers how to move their bodies—how to make deliberate, coordinated motions; how to listen to what their muscles are telling them; and how to make those muscles move faster and stronger. Through that, we help them develop a genuine love for movement and to go on to be active throughout their lives.
We teach our fencers confidence and perseverance—how to trust their skills; how to not be afraid of making mistakes; and, when they do make mistakes, how to learn from them instead of feeling ashamed of them.
We teach our fencers that sports are about a lot more than just winning—that winning is good, but improving and having fun while you do it is better.
Fence With Us!
Ready to get started? We can’t wait to have you! Take a look down below to get an idea of what it’s like to learn to fence with Modern Duelists.
Start by Taking an Intro to Fencing Class
Learn all of the basics of fencing and of moving like an athlete in our Youth Intro to Fencing program. Fencers work on coordination, making deliberate motions, and reacting quickly, all in the context of fencing. Classes are structured around games, meaning students learn through play instead of through rote technical drills.
For the first two months, students are considered beginners. Beginner students are introduced to the basics of fencing for the very first time, learning fencing footwork, attacks, hand positions, and how to think tactically.
Next, Move up to the Novice Level
Once beginners have spent two months learning the basics, they get promoted to novices—part two of the Youth Intro to Fencing program. Novice fencers continue mastering the basics alongside the beginners, but with real steel epees and with a greater focus on tactics. After the beginners wrap up their practice, novice students stay for extra practice on their bladework skills like parries and beats.
Most fencers spend another two months as novices; some spend a little more time here, and others a little less.
Join the Youth Training Class, Open Bouting & more!
Once fencers have completed their stint as novices, they officially graduate from the Intro program! Next up: the Youth Training Class. This is our main class for kids of all levels; even our most advanced fencers still attend this class to work alongside their more novice teammates and help them improve.
Fencers can practice the skills they learn in class during Open Bouting. During open bouting, the floor is open to fence matches against as many of your teammates as you’d like. For most fencers, this is the best part.
Fencers are also now ready to compete, but only if they want. Competition is never required, but it is a lot of fun! MoDuel hosts a lot of competitions, so there are plenty of unintimidating options on home turf.
