Here at Modern Duelists Fencing Academy, we highly recommend Absolute Fencing Gear for purchasing your equipment. They have very competitive prices, and we have found they have great customer service and ship to Maryland and Delaware very quickly, even with standard UPS shipping. The recommended equipment on this page is from Absolute Fencing, but students are welcome to buy equipment from any reputable vendor.
These items are required for the beginner class
Standard, 3-W glove
Info: Any 3-weapon (3-W) glove is fine for our classes–Absolute’s entire selection can be found here. Electric saber gloves are NOT permitted.
Info: The recommended jackets are very good for the price. We recommend the front-zip jackets because they are easy to put on and take off without help. The recommended Front-zip jackets also have nylon panels, which allow them to stretch and fit better. Back-zip jackets have a zipper in the center of the back and can be difficult to put on and take off, but are cheaper than their front-zip counterparts.
Note: Front-zip jackets are hand-specific (right-handed or left-handed), back-zip jackets are not.
Athletic Supporter Cup
Note: Any standard athletic cup is fine for class. Absolute Fencing does sell one if you would like to include it in an order.
Women’s Plastic Chest Protector
(also acceptable): Women’s Breast Protector (pair)
Note: Female students only need to own either the plastic chest protector or pair of breast protectors, not both. The plastic chest protector is recommended for comfort, and it also provides additional protection to the entire chest.
These items are required for the intermediate/advanced class, in addition to all items that are required for the beginner class.
Info: Underarm protectors generally don’t vary much. The recommended “comfort” underarm protector offers good protection and maneuverability. The padded version is also available, which offers added cushioning for students who may want it.
AF Unisex Pants – Comfort
Info: The recommended knickers are higher quality than the most basic knickers that you can buy. Due to the flexibility demands of a fencer’s legs, it is generally recommended to pay a little bit extra for knickers that offer a better fit and flex than the most basic knickers.
AF Epee CE 350N Mask – Advanced
Info: Any 350N (non-FIE) Epee or 3-weapon mask is acceptable. Saber and Foil masks cannot be used because their conductive parts will interfere with your opponent’s epee. Like the knickers, it is recommended to spend a little extra on the masks, as higher-quality masks tend to fit better.
ELECTRIC EPEES & CORDS
After a student has enrolled in the intermediate/advanced class, they are encouraged (but not required) to purchase their own epees and bodycords. Two working electric epees and body cords are required for USFA competition.
FIE vs Non-FIE weapons – FIE weapons offer better performance and durability than non-FIE weapons, but at a significantly greater cost. All students are strongly recommended to start with non-FIE weapons to become familiar with their equipment preferences and hone their bladework skills. Coach Jeff can offer advice pertaining to when a student should start looking at FIE blades/weapons
AF Standard Epee – Pistol Grip
Guard: AF Standard
Pad: AF Plastic
Point: German (German points are much more robust than French and worth the extra money)
Socket: AF Epee Socket
Grip: AF Vis. Pistol (size varies by student—most use a medium. Coach Jeff has spare grips that students can try to determine the best fit)
Blade Size: 5
Info: This is a solid starter-epee for students. We strongly recommend that students buy a pistol grip for their first epee. Usually after a week using the pistol grip, students begin to prefer the pistol grip to the standard French grip epees used in the beginner class. German points are also strongly recommended, as they will pay for themselves in terms of durability and performance over the French point.
Standard Epee Body Cord
Info: Any Epee Body Cord is fine. The recommended cord is solid and well-priced
Many equipment venders offer starter sets for fencers who are looking to buy multiple items for the first time.
Info: A fencing equipment bag is highly recommended once a student has purchased his or her own weapons. Any fencing bag is fine as long as it fits the needs of the student and fits in the car!
Socks and Shoes
Info: There are fencing-specific socks and shoes, however these are not required for competition or for the club. They are personal preference only. As long as the student has closed-toed, well-fitting athletic shoes and socks that cover up to the knee (such as baseball socks), they will be able to fence.
