A QUICK LOOK INTO THE WORLD OF FENCING
Fencing–a Summer Olympic Sport–is the only sport to be featured in every Modern Olympic Games. The sport itself is based on European sword dueling and the many of the blade techniques we use today are the same tried-and-true techniques from centuries ago. Modern fencing, however, makes use of electronic scoring devices to determine when a fencer has been hit.
In fencing there are three weapons: the foil, saber, and epee (pronounced ep-ay). Here at Modern Duelists Fencing Academy, our sole focus is on epee fencing. The epee is based on “first blood dueling” which meant that the duelists were just trying to draw blood, and whoever hit first, won. Modern epee has basically the same rules–whoever hits first gets a point, or if both fencers hit each other within 1/25th of a second, both fencers get a point.
Epee features the simplest rules and is the most cost-effective weapon to start competition in, if you’re interested in tournaments. Epee fencing has HUGE presence in this region, and there are no shortage of tournaments available for competitive fencers.
WHY YOU SHOULD FENCE
First, fencing is an awesome way to get some exercise! Fencers build an incredible skill set, both mentally and physically during training. Fencers have to think on their feet (quick thinking & mental acuity), while coordinating their bladework (hand-eye coordination, plus arm speed & strength) all while moving and constantly changing directions and speed (agility, explosiveness, and core stability). This amazing combination has lead to fencing earning the nickname “physical chess”
Despite the multitude of skills that we help you develop here, fencing is still incredibly accessible for beginners. We will help you develop your fencing game, and there are no knowledge or athletic requirements to start! The awesome thing about fencing is that thanks to its tactical and technical aspects, you don’t have to be a super-athlete to succeed (and we’ll help you get faster and stronger every step of the way, anyway).
Also, fencing is a great way to make new friends, but it’s also an individual sport (fencing bouts are one-on-one), which means that you get to learn and experience every aspect of epee fencing. Every technique, tactic, and physical skill can and will be made available for you to use in a bout. This is something that many fencers find extremely appealing.
